Devi Agomoni -Welcoming Maa Durga

Saturday, October 10, 2026 · 8:30 AM

Mahalaya marks the beginning of the festive season for Bengalis around the world. It is the day we listen for the arrival of Maa Durga, remember the timeless sounds of Mahishasura Mardini, and begin counting the days until Durga Puja.

This year, Charlotte Utsob invites the Bengali community and friends from across Charlotte and the Carolinas to celebrate Mahalaya 2026 together with Devi Agomoni, music, dance, food, conversation, and plenty of adda.

Come spend a beautiful autumn morning outdoors with family and friends as we welcome Maa Durga and officially begin our journey toward Durga Puja.

A Morning of Bengali Culture, Music & Dance

Mahalaya is deeply connected with Bengali culture and the anticipation of Durga Puja.

We will celebrate the occasion through a cultural program featuring Bengali songs, dance and other performances, bringing together members of our community and giving our children and adults an opportunity to share their talents.

And, of course, no Bengali gathering is complete without food and adda!

After the cultural program, enjoy a Bengali-style brunch, desserts and other treats, followed by plenty of time to relax, meet friends, make new ones and simply enjoy the morning together.

Come in Your Festive Attire

There is no formal dress code, but we encourage everyone to embrace the festive spirit.

Bengali or Indian traditional attire is especially welcome:

  • Saree

  • Dhoti & panjabi

  • Kurta / kurti

  • Salwar kameez

  • Lehenga

  • Indian or Bengali festive wear

Of course, come in whatever makes you comfortable. The most important thing is to bring your family, your friends and your festive spirit!

Mahalaya in the Park 🌿

Our Mahalaya celebration will be held outdoors at McDowell Nature Preserve, surrounded by trees and the beautiful natural setting of the park.

October mornings in Charlotte can be wonderfully crisp, and the weather can change. The morning may be cool, there may be dew on the grass, and temperatures can shift as the day progresses.

We recommend dressing in layers and bringing a light jacket or sweater. Comfortable shoes are also a good idea for enjoying the park and walking around the event area.

Come prepared for an outdoor celebration - and enjoy Mahalaya in a beautiful setting with nature all around us.

Why We Celebrate Mahalaya

For Bengalis, Mahalaya is more than simply a date on the calendar. It marks the beginning of the countdown to Durga Puja and evokes memories of family, tradition and the unmistakable sound of Mahishasura Mardini.

Across Bengal and Bengali communities around the world, Mahalaya is associated with Devi Paksha, the arrival of Maa Durga, and the beginning of the festive season.

Here in Charlotte, we continue that tradition by coming together as a community — sharing our culture with our children, welcoming friends from all backgrounds, and creating new memories together.
